The Mosque
// April 26, 2003 (more •) The Taj Mahal is flanked by two identical structures, the one above being the mosque. It is strange to have a mosque at such a place though, I wonder. Nevertheless, it is as beautiful as any other structure in the complex, standing tall on the Chameli Farsh.(Filed in Taj Mahal)

Taj Mahal was built by a muslim sultan so it is not surprising that a mosque was built as well. In islam, what you are doing for afterlife is much more important than what you are doing for the world life.
That must be the reason.
